Bittersweet Nostalgia
by Sophie Pearson
Sophie Pearson’s second solo exhibition, Bittersweet Nostalgia, explores childhood trauma and the lasting effects of it into adulthood. Starting with a tub of old childhood photos, Pearson investigates her feelings about her childhood by recreating these nostalgic moments in paint. In doing so, she removes the parental figure from the piece, replacing them with a color that corresponds with her emotions. Bright red represents her father, who is angry, passionate, and loud. Blue, and sometimes also red, represents her mother, who she associates more with sadness. Using oil sticks, Pearson connects with her inner child by scribbling over top of the carefully painted pieces. Sometimes simple scribbles, sometimes with more intentional symbolism, she aims to tell a story of how “little her” feels in connection with her adult self. On view at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery April 29-May 31.
