Unspoken | October Member Show

This show centers on works that incorporate handwriting, text, or letterforms as a visual or conceptual element.  A different approach to the theme of ‘Unspoken’ could be exploring silence, secrecy, symbolism, things left unsaid, or communication without words.

  • We welcome artwork in any medium — including but not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, sculpture, installation, fiber arts, and digital works — as long as it engages with the theme. This could mean:

    • Handwritten letters, diary entries, or journal pages integrated into the work

    • Found or reimagined text from historical documents, books, or graffiti

    • Calligraphy, typography, or abstracted letterforms as visual design

    • Text as a hidden layer — legible or obscured — to suggest secrecy, memory, or vulnerability

    • Words or phrases that carry emotional weight, provoke curiosity, or challenge perception

We encourage both literal and abstract interpretations. The “unspoken” may be personal or universal, playful or solemn, minimal or layered. Think about what is left unsaid, what conversation topics are taboo, and what you wish you could say but don’t?

  • Open to NHAA members. All member work will be accepted.
