‘Cool Colors and Commentary’

Work of NHAA artist Bob Thoresen

PORTSMOUTH – New Hampshire Art Association artist Bob Thoresen will be displaying artwork inspired by his recent travels to Iceland and the Baltic countries during the month of October in the South Gallery of the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery on State Street
“In this series of pieces, I have experimented with a variety of techniques – some of which I have not used before – and compositions,” Thoresen said. “I have also done a few commentary pieces about political and social issues dividing our country at the present time.”
During his recent travels, Thoresen explored new media, such as resins, highly saturated colors, thick and varied textures/materials, and quick gestural impressions to create a fresh body of work.
“The Iceland work uses colors – grays, blacks, and greens –not often found in my other work,” he said. “One construction piece re-uses the pieces of packaging material found in recent deliveries to our home.”
The commentary pieces spring from a series Thoresen did when there was unusual turmoil in the country from the assassination of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy and the resulting riots, and the protests associated with the Vietnam War. “There may not be as much violence as 1968, but there are bitter divisions in the current political climate and serious questions about the political leadership and the direction of the country,” he explained.
Thoresen said he has been producing artwork in bursts over many decades when time and energy permitted. “I have been actively involved in many visual arts related activities in Portsmouth and elsewhere,” he said. “I organized and curated an international show featuring American and Japanese artists which toured in Japan and New Hampshire as part of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty celebration.”
Thoresen was also part of a team that created the Artist Advancement Grant for the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and for many years served as a juror for the selection of the recipient for that award.
“Since retiring from my planning and development consulting career, I have been more engaged in producing art and having and participating in juried shows in Portsmouth and in Florida,” he said. “I appeared in the 2017 Discover Portsmouth show, ‘What Artists Look Like’.”
Thoresen served on the Board of Directors of the NHAA and as its President from 2005 to 2009.
