Contemporary Currents

In September 1961, Portsmouth residents Betty and Barney Hill reported what would become one of the most famous UFO encounters in American history. Their account of a nighttime experience in northern New Hampshire introduced imagery - large-eyed extraterrestrials, celestial maps, and spacecraft - that would shape decades of popular culture. This year’s Contemporary Currents exhibition explores the Hills’ story from multiple perspectives, examining its cultural impact, the couple’s own lives, and the role historians and archivists have played in preserving this enduring narrative.
