George Longfish(Seneca/Tuscarora) was born in 1942 in Oshweken, Ontario, Canada. Raised on the Iroquois Indian reservation and later, in Chicago, where he graduated in 1960 from Tuley High School, Longfish was trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied painting, sculpture, film and printmaking.
Longfish’s use of bold colors and crosscutting words brings a vitality that “speaks to the size of the issues” his paintings examine. His work engages political issues that have a long history, and the paintings necessarily work on a large and uncensored scale—with colors that strike, not appease, with text that complicates, not explains.
