The New Hampshire Art Association
Our History & Mission
The NHAA was founded in 1940. It is a non-profit,
educational, and professional association
formed for the following purposes:
- To promote the arts and the profession of those artists
who create art.
- To stimulate interest and participation of its members in
exhibitions and professional endeavors.
- To exhibit and sell members' works (paintings, sculpture,
graphic arts, mixed media, and drawings) in a variety of
juried and non-juried exhibitions.
- To advance the public understanding and appreciation of
the arts.
The NHAA's Levy Gallery, located at 136 State Street, is one of the largest retail galleries
in Portsmouth. It is divided into three spaces.
The Main Gallery
regularly exhibits the work of members and, for open exhibits,
non-members.
The East Gallery is available, on a rental basis,
for NHAA members who want to present a focused or more extensive
body of work. The East Gallery also includes a large window
display area. For larger exhibitions, the East
Gallery area becomes an extension of the Main Gallery. It's not
available for rental use during those events.
The Gerry Frazier Small Works Gallery displays smaller examples
of recent member work. The
artwork in the Small Works Gallery is rotated regularly, to
help ensure that members' most recent work is always on display.

The NHAA's Lassonde Homestead in Boscawen, NH
The NHAA's Lassonde Homestead is where we do the
new member jurying. We also hold occasional meetings & other events there,
and we take full advantage of the property's barn to store
the panels and extra print bins that we use in our exhibit
at the League of NH Craftsmen's annual Sunapee Craft Fair.
We also have some artist studio space available for rent at the
Lassonde Homestead. Contact the Levy Gallery at 603-431-4230
if you're interested.

Volunteer Opportunities
Wondering how you can help? Here are some suggestions:
- Help a program.
Many of our Artist Forum and Photo Group programs require volunteers to keep them going.
Can you volunteer a day or so per month? It's a great way to help keep our
programs going.
- Gallery-sit.
Sign up to staff the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery. It's open Wed–Sun.
Greet visitors and discuss the artwork with them, answer the phones, sell artwork and
stuff an envelope or two while you're there.
- Share your ideas.
Attend the annual meeting each June, the monthly artist forum or
photo group meetings, or a monthly board
meeting to share your suggestions and ideas.
- Join a committee.
Interested in membership? Communications? Fund
raising? Finance? If it needs to be done, there's
probably a committee for it, and they can likely
use your help.
- Spiff up the joint.
Both our facilities are housed in lovely old buildings,
with all the maintenance requirements that accompany
the charm. Like to do yard work? The Lassonde Homestead
in Boscawen is calling you! Like to paint? Organize? File?
Both locations could use your help.
- Communication.
Do you like to write? Do you have graphic design
or web design skills? Do you have suggestions for
other ways to promote our events, members and programs?
We can use you.
- Feed us.
There's always an occasion that requires food:
a meeting, a gallery opening, a work session...
Wherever there's an artist, there's a food
requirement. If you have cooking skills, you will be
endlessly loved and appreciated.
Do any of these activities appeal to you?

Employment
Executive Director
The New Hampshire Art Association is accepting applications for a dynamic professional
to lead the NHAA into the future. The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors,
will supervise a small part time staff, and coordinate a large group of volunteers. A bachelor's
degree from an accredited college/university is strongly preferred with two years of progressively
responsible experience. A strong history of active interest in the visual arts is required. A full
job description and application instructions is available:
Executive Director Job Description (.pdf)
Deadline for applications: June 3, 2008 at 5 PM.
Membership
The New Hampshire Art Association has over 400 juried members.
Most of our members come from NH and our neighboring states,
but we do have a few members from outside the region.
Membership dues are $70/yr — an investment that provides
significant benefits for artists:
- The opportunity to participate in members-only exhibits:
These include the annual Currier Museum
exhibition in Manchester (an annual tradition
since 1945) and the
League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Annual Fair at the Mount Sunapee Resort,
which draws thousands of art lovers from all over
the country.
- The ability to exhibit at the Robert Lincoln Levy
Gallery in Portsmouth, NH, a popular tourist destination
(subject to Board approval and rental/exhibit scheduling).
- A chance to offer instruction, teach a class, start a
discussion group, network with your peers and participate
in art-related programs. Do you have a talent to share with
fellow artists? We're all ears!
- The opportunity to learn more about the business of art:
volunteer to gallery-sit, help hang a show
(or clean up after one!), design/produce
promotional materials, help with fundraising
efforts or stewardship of sponsors, or serve
on any of the active committees who recommend
changes to the Board.
- A reduced entry fee for all of the juried exhibitions
open to regional artists.
These exhibitions include: The Omer T. Lassonde
Memorial Exhibition; Prescott Park Arts Festival;
The Jack Parfitt Memorial Exhibition; and the
Joan L. Dunfey Memorial Exhibition.
- The opportunity to help support the Arts. Even if
you're not a practicing artist, as a Patron Member, your financial contribution
(we suggest $50 or more) is vital to the NHAA's ongoing
fiscal health. In addition to financial support, though,
there are many ways you can donate your time and talents
to help keep our organization thriving.
- Networking opportunities: meet a wide range of artists,
right in your backyard! People with similar dreams, struggles,
quirks, talents, and ideas. And then there are
those artists with entirely different dreams,
struggles, quirks, talents, and ideas... Those
folks are even more interesting!
- Awards. Some of the NHAA's exhibitions offer monetary and
other awards. Wouldn't you like to win a little price money
and be able to call yourself an "award-winning artist"?
New Member Jurying
NHAA membership is determined by a semi-annual jury process,
which takes place in March and September. The specific
membership jurying dates are on the Members page.
Interested in becoming a member? Download our membership application (.pdf) to get started.
Donations & Sponsorships
Don't have time to help out? Live too far from the galleries?
Tax-deductible monetary donations are especially welcome, and we
appreciate donations of equipment and needed supplies.
We also have an ongoing need for sponsors. If you're a business,
you should should consider sponsoring a show or an award. We'll
publicize your business on our resources page and in the event's
promotional materials.
Considering becoming a sponsor or donor? Please
contact Bob Thoresen at the Levy Gallery (603-431-4230).
